This news is hot and fresh… Hold on to you pants people. We just got an update that Chrome OS is based on UBUNTU Karmic Koala.
You can see and even look at the Source code of the upcoming Google Chrome OS here.
We took some Screenshots of the legit files from the Original Official Chromium Site.

Should we call it GOO-Buntu?

Actually, no. This is just for dependencies when you build and compile the kernel and image. Most of the dependencies and latest tools are in Karmic and Google has set up a Karmic-specific repo for grabbing other bits and then adding gcc-addons. You could probably do all of this in Fedora 12 or OpenSUSE 11.2 too, it’s just easier in Karmic.
I’ve actually built the ChromiumOS image from the source and while I built it in Karmic, I the kernel seems custom and the x-interface certainly is. Not to say you couldn’t probably graft Chrome OS on top of a debian base, but I think this something totally new.
Yup christina thanks for the update i will be soon posting this too, by the way i loved your screen cast you did on mashable.
One thing i might wanna say is that Google has to control the flow how it envisions the Chrome OS with the Open source model, even developers like us do hesitate till yet to completely leave the desktop app env to the cloud.
