A stock market analyst, Mark McKechnie, estimated that Verizon stores had 200,000 units of the Motorola DROID on hand to sale at launch. He figures that the stores were able to sell half of its’ stock which would indicate that Big Red sold 100,000 phones during the opening weekend. Motorola expects 1 million DROID’s to be sold over the balance of the year with 10 million crossing the cash register in 2010. "I see the first few days as encouraging," McKechnie said. "There seems to be pretty good demand — they’ve taken the right steps and picked a good partner with Google on the Android side." Another analyst, Jim Suva of Citigroup, expects 1.3 million handsets to be sold in the fourth quarter with 9.2 million moving in 2010.
The last phone dubbed a potential iPhone-killer — the Palm Pre — sold between 45,000 and 100,000 units in its first weekend of release.It will be interesting to see how the Droid continues to sell in the coming weeks — especially with the holiday shopping season just starting to take off.
Verizon now has a phone that can match up to the iPhone and the current roster of ads cracking on AT&T’s notoriously spotty 3G coverage has led to a negative perception of the latter carrier among the 18 to 34 year old demographic, a group that has the necessary discretionary funds to purchase a phone like the DROID.
