It was a big day a big day on the internet on the 18th of January 2012 as many companies including the likes of Google, Microsoft, WordPress, Facebook and the worlds biggest encyclopedia Wikipedia blacked out their logos and their sites completely opposing and protesting against the SOPA and PIPA bill. If you were living under a rock and don’t know about the bills, they are two bills that were supposed to be passed by American lawmakers to ban and block users form accessing content freely over the internet.
The biggest move was made by Wikipeda, the worlds largest encyclopedia which had shutdown its site for 24 hours. That day Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also gave his official statement opposing the two bills and telling how they would hurt the internet. And yesterday the plug was pulled from both SOPA and PIPA.
But Facebook wasn’t completely shutdown on Wednesday the 18th of January 2012. But what if it was. What would have happened to the internet. Lets see.
- Advertisers would be furious; space they bought in good faith would either be blacked out or appear next to blacked-out text.
- Half of the planet would have not remembered any ones birthday
- Half of the internet is connected with Facebook like, comment and login buttons meaning no social media integration for sites
- 800 million users would have been cursing and joining Google+
- Various events planned and invited on Facebook would have been empty in attendance
So what do you think else would have happened if Facebook was shutdown for a day? Leave us your comments…
